So Good He Signs His Work

Patrick is one of those guys that likes to play around with the wood working tools. Every once and a while he makes something that he is proud enough to show off. This fine cutting board is one such item.
He sent me a bunch of photos of some of his works in progress. I especially liked the photo of the hand plainer. Photography might be one of your other talent's.

Carve It Up!

One of our customers is always carving up something neat. Here are a few of her carvings. The guy in the back is carved out of an old golf ball. (no we don't sell golf balls)She brings in some of her treasure every once in awhile. She belongs to a carving club in the area. She likes to hunt though our short cut-offs to find wood to turn into masterpieces. I don't show it here but she carves a cute little mouse that looks so real you want to swat it with a broom.

Jewel of a Box

One of our customers brought in this magnificent jewelery box. He made it out of cherry and accented it with walnut. He even took the time to make the hinges out of walnut. Great job! I can tell he put a lot of care into making this piece. It always amazes me what people can make out of a few pieces of wood. I love seeing these wonderful works of art that our customers bring in. And I love sharing them with you. I find them inspiring. Now get busy making more fantastic works of art!

Thresholds in Transition

At Elegant Wood we make about 100 custom wood transitions and thresholds a year. Now I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but it is enough for us to know that there is a market out there for custom transitions. The big box stores only sell a few one size fits all transition strips. Usually made of plastic coated wood. They may work for some of your needs but we have found that they don't work for every situation.

Most folks need a transition in one of the above shapes. So when you call us to make one for you please tell us which shape will work for you. The flat bottom one is for going between two surfaces that are the same level. The "T" shaped one is for when there is a gap between the two different rooms. The step shaped one is for transitioning rooms of different elevations. These three basic shapes can be modified to meet your specific needs.

You should also consider which wood to use. Red oak is the most common. Maple is used a lot because of it's hardness. White oak is used for outside applications. But transitions can be made of most hardwoods, but almost never of poplar or soft pines. You also need to keep in mind that the slope of the transition should not be so steep as to be a trip hazard. The thickness is also determined by whether or not there is a door that will swing above it.

We have made transitions and threshold in a wide variety of shapes. Most simple ones cost about $35 to $45 dollars but that all depends on the difficulty and the amount and type of wood that is used. We strongly recommend that you don't try to make these yourself because it is real dangerous. Our craftsmen have 25+ years of experience and they still have all of their fingers.

What Time Is It?

One of our customers brought in this hour glass that he made with wood that he purchased from us. He used both Blood wood and Quebracho. He informed me that the Quebracho is called "Axe Breaker" in Bolivia. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebracho )He also informed me that while he was turning this on the lathe it flung off and hit him in the face. (Always wear a face shield.) He is fine but he is glad it is not called "Face Breaker"!

What Do We Do?

Some folks when they hear our name "Elegant Wood Products", they think of furnature, or small nick nacks made of wood. Like jewery boxes, mail boxes or craft items. Of course we can make all of those things here, but what we are really known for is excelent mouldings and doors and achitecual florishes. Like columns and paladium arches and crown assemblys that are out of this world. Yes we can build custom furnature also. We make a lot of mantles and book shelves and entertainment centers. So what do we do, well we don't just sell moldings, doors and stair part or flooring. We do the custom things that are going to make your home more valuable and more enjoyable to live in.

We at ElegantWood are starting this blog to keep our customers and the general public informed of all that can be done to beautify your home with wood.
